Instead of looking forward to the trends of 2021, today we’re stepping back in time to embrace a whole other era of fashion. The ‘80s were a time of vibrant neons, larger than life hair and wild patterns galore. Today, we’re sharing how you can add some ‘80s oomph to any look with a few key tips.

Print and Texture

Think leather. Animal print. Tartan. Acid wash. Retro. It’s usually the little things that make an outfit, but way back when, the fashion icons went all out. From the infamous neon athleisure trend to grunge-y glam rock looks, this era was famous for a reason! If you’re dipping a toe into the ‘80s aesthetic, maybe start small with a pair of sleek leather trousers, a vintage denim jacket or a classic ‘80s band tee. Look to some of music’s most famous patrons for inspiration: Madonna, Prince, David Bowie and Cyndi Lauper nailed the fashion stakes at the time!

The Higher the Hair, the Closer to God

Does anyone remember that saying? Bonus points if you can remember who said it, too – the glorious Dolly Parton. During the 1980s, big volume was all the rage – everyone’s hair was large and in charge, standing out as well as tall. Almost like a hairspray-encrusted halo. To add a classic ‘80s touch, many held their hair back with a bandana tied across their forehead. Think Axl Rose, fashion icon extraordinaire! If you’re not a fan of serious volume, there’s lots of other ‘80s hair alternatives: Farrah Fawcett’s iconic feathered ‘do, moussed curls a la Sarah Jessica Parker and Whitney Houston, the classic mullet and of course: a high side ponytail with a scrunchy.

A Touch of ‘80s Glam

Let’s not forget another important element: the face! Make-up trends in the ‘80s were worlds apart from what we see today. Way back when, one statement feature wasn’t a thing. Many paired neon eyes with a bold lip and no-one batted an eyelid. Common features of an ‘80s make-up arsenal were vibrant, cool-toned eyeshadows, dark eyes paired with striking red lips, extreme levels of pink blush, bushy brows, raccoon-esque liner, coloured mascaras and glossy lips. We wouldn’t recommend try all of these at once, but give ‘em a go one at a time – you might just discover a favourite new look!
